The 1995 School-by School Study

Following is a school-by-school study based on final standing in December 1995 for the various U B C first year calculus courses:

COURSE DESCRIPTION
MATHEMATICS 100 The basic course required of Science students.
MATHEMATICS 153 The basic course required of Engineering students.
MATHEMATICS 120 Honours version of Math 100(153). Invitation from excellence on the Euclid Contest or Mathematics 12 Scholarship Examination.
(The above three courses had the same final exam).
MATHEMATICS 140 Intended for pre-Commerce and Economics students.
MATHEMATICS 121 For students who obtained a mark of 5 in AP Calculus AB or at least 75% in the Mathematics 100 Challenge Examination.

Table of Results in Dec 1995 compares performance of female and male students. For the students of each course the average Math 12 grade and average course grade are given.

Table A compares schools by region and type. B.C. schools identified by region are public schools. Suburban Vancouver refers to public schools in Burnaby, Richmond, Coquitlam, Delta, New Westminster, North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Maple Ridge, and Langley.

The school-by-school Tables (IA Vancouver schools, IIA Suburban Vancouver schools, IIIA B.C. schools outside metropolitan Vancouver) include all schools with at least 10 students in B C calculus classes in the Fall of 1995. The continued improvement of students from Earl Marriott and Burnaby South should be noted.

The "ranking" of a school is determined by equally weighting its results in the categories of % passing, % with A standing, and the change of its students’ average grades in Math 12 and UBC Math courses.

David Thompson (Vancouver east) has ranked in the top third of all schools for nine consecutive years (1987-1995)!!!!!!!!!

Eric Hamber (Vancouver west) has ranked in the top third for six consecutive years (1990-1995)!!!!!!

Killarney (Vancouver east) has ranked in the top third for five consecutive years (1991-1995)!!!!!

Handsworth (North Vancouver) has ranked in the top third for four consecutive years (1992-1995)!!!!

Burnaby North (Burnaby), Lord Byng (Vancouver west) and Sir Winston Churchill (Vancouver west) have ranked in the top third for three consecutive years!!!

Crofton House (Private, Vancouver), Prince of Wales (Vancouver west), Point Grey (Vancouver west) and Windermere (Vancouver east) have ranked in the top third for two consecutive years (1994-1995)!!

Abbotsford (Abbotsford), Yale (Abbotsford), Sutherland (North Vancouver), Steveston (Richmond), Kitsilano (Vancouver west), Little Flower Academy (Catholic, Vancouver) and Templeton (Vancouver east) ranked in the top third in 1995!
