Syllabus
The 2017 Calculus Challenge Exam will be composed by
UBC Mathematics Faculty, following the curriculum of Calculus 12 as set
out by the BC Ministry of Education.
The examiners will pay close attention to the official
Prescribed Learning Outcomes for Calculus 12. The emphasis, however, will be on problem solving,
which is to be threaded through the entire curriculum.
Formulas.
A minimal formula sheet will be provided with the test.

Many facts students may find useful are not listed on the
formula sheet.
These should be memorized.
They include, but are not limited to, the following.

the quadratic formula, which gives the solutions for x
in ax+bx+c=0 when a is nonzero

differentiation rules (limit definition,
product rule, quotient rule, chain rule)

derivatives of powers, trigonometric
functions, inverse sine, inverse tangent,
exponentials with various bases, logarithms, etc.

antiderivatives of functions obtained as derivatives
just mentioned,

geometric formulas for areas of plane regions like rectangles,
triangles, circles, and circular sectors, etc.

geometric formulas for volumes of solids like
rectangular boxes, spheres, cones, etc.
